Hard Drive

Be Familiar with Hard Drive
By: Fortunity Dwi

Hard drive or also known as hard disk drive is very fundamental component on today’s computer. You can’t call it computer if it does not have any hard drive. Although you can easily have removable storing media which is functionally more or less similar with hard drive, but still hard disk drive is very important and fundamental computer part.

The hard drive is the place where all of your software and files or data stored in your personal computer. Therefore, we can say that any hard drive failure or damage will definitely cause a huge data lost from your computer. No one wants to experience this horrible situation. That is just because how precious the data or file can be to someone.

The storing concept of hard drive is more or less similar with what we have known for years in audio cassette tapes or even video tapes. Audio cassette tape stores audio whilst the video tapes stores both audio and visual data.

Both storing media utilize very thin tape which has a delicate magnetic material on top of the tape. Just like video or cassette tapes, hard drive storing media contains thin and round metal platters, which also has similar type of magnetic storing medium on top of these metal platters.

When it was initially introduced in 1956, the hard disk size is very big compared to what we can see today. The storing capability was also very small, only 4,4 MB. Just imagine how big the storing capacity of today’s hard disk storing media is. For years since 2002, the biggest size of storing media we can have inside our personal computer was only 250 MB. But in the last couple of years, we can notice that hard drive with terabyte capacity is also available now.
